Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon’s upcoming Apple series, The Morning Show, just aired its first segment. A full trailer for the high-profile show, which also stars Steve Carell, Mark Duplass, and Billy Crudup, was released today and goes there when it comes to the current climate.
The Morning Show, which is set to debut on AppleTV+ later this year, follows Alex Levy (Aniston) as the host of a fledgling network news show. In addition to the show struggling to gain credibility, Aniston also loses her longtime co-anchor and partner Mitch Kessler (Carell), due to multiple allegations brought against him. Now the network is searching for a fresh face to imbue the program with new energy. Sound familiar?
The show suggests a Broadcast News that directly addresses the #MeToo movement. “We are in the middle of an epic rebirth,” Crudup’s character states, although misogyny is still included in his vision for the show’s future. Instead of learning from Carell’s downfall, he moves to replace Aniston, “whose sell-by date expired years ago” for the fiery, younger Witherspoon.
There is Big Little Lies-level screaming and talk of reclaiming power in a male-dominated landscape. At one point, Crudup’s character says, “Watching a beloved woman’s breakdown is timeless American entertainment.” But one gets the feeling that watching that same woman rebuild will be just as delicious. Considering Apple picked up the show for two 10-episode seasons, there will be plenty to dig into.
